A 16ft Sculpture of an eagle/bear/salmon/bear cubs from a spruce tree.
This is the letter from the customer who owns the Totem Pole
Ten years ago when we cleared for the building of our new house, the majestic spruce out front was one of the trees we chose to keep. Sadly, over the years it became apparent that it had incurred some damage and was not going to survive. When we finally made the decision to have it taken down, my husband commented that he would like to have someone come in and do a carving on the stump. Our daughter had been up to Whistler recently and saw Alex’s shop in Britannia Beach and suggested we contact him. During the time Alex did the carving, we talked lots about his reason for getting into this line of work and enjoyed hearing his stories of coming from the Maritimes and eventually ending up in B.C. with plans to stay.
My husband and Alex discussed the content of the carving every step of the way with Alex giving us new ideas as to what we could add and my husband letting Alex know that the bear could not be “cute” – had to be a grumpy bear. Alex saw room to give me my “cute” cub just underneath the salmon in the eagle’s talons – and right at the cub’s bottom was a knot shaped like a heart, so it all worked out perfectly.
We enjoyed working with Alex, he was very open to all of our requests and he was very helpful in his attempts to make us picture the finished product. Our neighbors and people coming to this area stopped regularly to watch Alex’s progress and are now checking out Alex’s masterpiece.
Thanks, Alex. We hope you will come by often and check up on your artwork as well as have a cup of coffee with us.
